Myth Busting: Does SAP Cloud ERP Take Too Long to Deploy?

Nobody wants to bet the business on a multi-year IT project. If that is why SAP is off your list, the concern is fair.

Long ERP projects have a reputation for a reason. Teams spend months documenting how things work today, then more months rebuilding those same processes inside a new system. Meanwhile the business waits, the budget drains, and the people running the project are pulled away from their real jobs.

The length of those projects was rarely about the software. It was about building everything from scratch.

Why deployment is faster now

SAP Cloud ERP is implemented from preconfigured industry best practices, with tools and processes for a guided setup. You start from processes that already work and adjust only where your business is genuinely different.

Much of the heavy lifting is automated, too. Configuration, testing and data migration are streamlined by capabilities built into the solution, and SAP's partner ecosystem helps keep the project on schedule and within budget. The result is a shorter path to value and momentum you can keep as the business grows.

The proof: PureTech Scientific

PureTech Scientific makes ultrahigh-purity glycolic acid used in pharmaceuticals, personal care products and electronics. Based in Belle, West Virginia, with 50 employees, it brings more than 85 years of operating experience.

In 2023 it was carved out of The Chemours Company, backed by a private equity sponsor with an ambitious growth plan. A transition service agreement gave it limited time to stand up its own business operations. The challenge was stark: no legacy processes, no technology and no internal IT team. As CIO Brian Hardee put it, the company needed "predefined processes and proven best practices from the get-go."

If your company is facing a deadline it cannot move, whether a carve-out, an acquisition or a system reaching end of life, this is the situation that matters most.

PureTech adopted SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition with a fit-to-standard mindset. It used SAP's built-in best practices instead of designing processes from scratch, followed the SAP Activate methodology, and had direct access to SAP experts throughout. Standard workflows went live across sales, distribution, materials, quality, plant maintenance, asset management and finance.

The results:

  • Live in the cloud in 15 weeks, from start to finish

  • US$5 million in orders processed within two weeks of go-live

  • Transition service agreement deadline met

  • Real-time dashboards on cash flow, supply chain and daily production for the business and its parent company

Because the core stayed standard, PureTech has since added SAP Sales Cloud and SAP Digital Manufacturing. "From start to finish, we were live in the public cloud in just 15 weeks," Hardee said. "And within the first two weeks of going live, we fulfilled $5 million worth of orders without any challenges."

What a safe first step looks like

Speed and safety are not opposites. The fastest projects are the ones that settle the big questions before any build begins.

That starts with a digital discovery assessment, which defines your scope, timelines and key processes upfront, so everyone knows what is being delivered and when. From there, the rule is simple: standard processes are the default, and every exception has to earn its place. The SAP Activate methodology then structures the work, supported by SAP best practices, SAP Cloud ALM and SAP Build. With that approach, SAP says go-lives can happen in as little as 10 weeks.

A clear plan before you start is what keeps a fast project from becoming a risky one.

How Qubittron shortens the path

Every week an ERP project runs costs you consultant time, internal hours and delayed value. Shortening the timeline is the most direct way to lower the risk.

Qubittron is an AI-first SAP partner based in Oakville, Ontario. We bring the Qubi AI Suite, our agentic AI solutions, into the implementation itself. It picks up work that would otherwise fill consultants' and your team's calendars, so the project moves faster without cutting corners.

We are also an SAP Silver Partner and Sell Partner, which means your subscription, implementation, training and support all come from us. One partner holds the plan and the deadline, from the first conversation to go-live.

The next step

Book a free, 30-minute Myth Check. Bring your deadline and the question your leadership team keeps asking: "How long would this really take?" We will look at your processes and give you a realistic timeline, not a sales estimate. No obligation.

A fast project is not a gamble when the plan comes first.
