Key Takeaways

Using our modernization framework with SAP BTP, we reduced a client’s annual operational cost from $550,000 to $29,000, achieving a 95% TCO reduction.

Through our UX and integration strategy, we made the application fully responsive across all devices, increasing user adoption.

Successful SAP BTP transformations require the right partner. We deliver the expertise, tailored development, and strategic guidance needed for long-term sustainability

Recently, we helped a client migrate a complex and business-critical legacy application to SAP BTP. This project shows how migration enabled the client to achieve significant cost savings and improved functionality.

A Complex Legacy System

Our client operated a legacy application deeply integrated with their core SAP system. While it was essential for operations, it presented several challenges:

  • High Total Cost of Ownership (TCO): Maintaining the application and its infrastructure cost approximately $550,000 annually.

  • Complex integration points: Years of development made changes difficult within the SAP environment.

  • Lack of modern accessibility: The application was built only for desktop use and lacked a responsive design for tablets or mobile devices, reducing flexibility.

Together, these issues created a system that was expensive to run and didn’t meet modern usability standards.

Modernize legacy SAP apps with Qubittron: migrate to SAP Business Technology Platform and cut annual TCO 95% (from $550K to $29K) while enabling responsive UX and future-ready operations.

Strategic Migration to SAP BTP

We were engaged to address these challenges. After assessing the situation, we recommended a strategic migration to SAP BTP as the most effective approach. Our project plan included developing a new application within SAP BTP, managing integration, and modernizing the user interface.

We analyzed and rebuilt the integration points using SAP BTP’s tools and methodologies for greater stability and maintainability.

To modernize the interface, we designed and implemented a new, intuitive UI with a responsive design to ensure compatibility across desktops, tablets, and mobile devices.

Quantifiable Outcomes and Operational Improvements

Despite the inherent complexities, our team completed the migration project within several months. The migration to the new SAP BTP application delivered measurable and meaningful results.

  • TCO Reduction:  The annual operational cost decreased from $550,000 for the legacy system to $29,000 for the new SAP BTP application. This represents a 95 percent cost reduction, driven by SAP BTP’s platform-as-a-service model, which lowered infrastructure overhead and maintenance requirements.

  • Enhanced Accessibility and Usability:  The new application is fully accessible on any device, allowing users to perform tasks regardless of location or device preference. The redesigned interface is intuitive and easy to navigate, leading to higher user adoption and improved efficiency.

  • Internal Team Enablement:  As part of our engagement, we provided SAP BTP training to the client’s internal SAP support staff at no additional cost. This training helped the client’s team handle Level 1 application support independently, reducing reliance on external vendors and further optimizing operational costs.

This project demonstrates the potential of SAP BTP as a platform for modernizing complex, tightly integrated legacy SAP applications. The outcomes highlight how organizations can achieve substantial operational cost reductions, such as the 95% TCO decrease realized in this case, along with major improvements in usability and accessibility. For companies facing challenges with aging, costly custom SAP applications, a BTP migration strategy offers a clear path toward modernization and efficiency.

What This Means for Enterprises Modernizing with SAP

SAP BTP adoption is accelerating. It is increasingly central to SAP’s strategy and customer modernization efforts. SAPinsider research highlights SAP BTP as a preferred platform for transformation initiatives and faster project delivery when used effectively, often alongside SAP S/4HANA. Staying informed about SAP BTP’s capabilities, including its growing role in enabling Business AI, is crucial.

Partnerships matter in complex scenarios. Our customers include organizations, from small and medium businesses (SMBs) to large enterprises using SAP, facing challenges with complex custom applications, high TCO often exceeding $100,000 per year, intricate integrations, and the need for modern, accessible user experiences. These organizations often require tailored development and strategic guidance for SAP BTP adoption, S/4HANA migration and optimization, or application management. We focus on these areas to ensure client success and provide transparent, flexible solutions.

When migrating to SAP BTP, end-users should evaluate several key factors. They include assessing current legacy costs against SAP BTP’s projected operational expenses, analyzing how SAP BTP’s Integration Suite can simplify and stabilize connections between SAP and non-SAP systems, and clearly defining needs for responsive design, mobile access, and improved workflows. Our clients like Aleron, Acara Solutions, and Victrola have successfully leveraged Qubittron’s SAP BTP expertise to navigate these decision points and achieve positive outcomes.
